After having some ideas of how the room looked like, it is time to explain why the Glass Room existed and where did its name come from. In the photo, there are three computers. The one on the right is a normal 486DX PC, but the two in the middle used to be the star of the whole lab. They were so expensive and advanced that a room was built to accomodate them. The film "Terminator II" were produced by workstations like these! They were the SGI INDIGO WORKSTATIONS. When the room was first built, researchers within the room were not permitted to shut the blinds so that everyone outside the room could marvel at these two state-of-the-art machines through the glass panels on both sides of the room. It was then obvious why the room was called the Glass Room. As Time went by, these two machines were not prestigious any more and by the time I worked in the room, all the blinds were shut. Then further down the track, there was no point to have the room so it was going to be dismantled. It was a good idea to have it taken down so that the general lab area would be bigger, but another incentive (from rumour) was about the budget-every long holiday there would be some renovation somewhere (Got it? ;). These photos were taken just before the destruction of the Glass Room. As far as I know, the two SGI workstations are not not in use anymore. |
